For the last 7 years I have enjoyed MAYBE 2 - 3 cigars a year only on those special occasions.  And those times I have smoked it was either a cigar that a friend gave me or something I just grabbed from the shop without knowing what I was smoking.  I have been belly aching to my wife that I want to enjoy cigars on a more regular basis but dont want to buy them and have them just sitting around the house.  Well what would a wonderful loving wife do... yup you guessed it, brought me a desktop humidor and 2 sampler packs.  I walked into a Cigar shop a few days ago looking for a hygrometer and while talking to a few of the guys there I realized there is so much to learn about cigars.  I guess my point, I want to learn the ins and outs of cigars so I know what I'm smoking and not look like a fool when I discuss them with others.  Looking forward to some words of wisdom from this forum.

    welcome!
the first and foremost thing you need to get straight about cigar hobbies:  if you enjoy it you are doing it right.  if you dont enjoy it somthing is wrong.

second, try as many cigars as you can

third, when you buy another humidor (not IF but WHEN) buy it 3 times larger than you think you will need.  otherwise you will end up like me with 3 desktop humidors and a cooler filled to the top with cigars lol.

read the information available about proper storing of cigars, im sure theres an article about that on this site.  theres no point in loading up on a bunch of cigars if they are just going to get ruined due to impropper storage.
just to cover the obvious things, under no circumstances should you inhale a cigar.  learn the proper way to cut a cigar for smoking, make sure you are lighting the right end.  sorry to dump all this stuff on you without pointing to info, but if you just google these things you are sure to come up with lots of info.  its late and i dont have time to get links for you now.

    Welcome.

Jihiggs spelled it out pretty well, try as many different cigars as you can, sample packs are a good way to go.  There are a lot of good places to buy off the net, Cigar.com, Cigar International, Famous-Smoke, JR Cigar, just to name a few, plus it is good to visit your local cigar shop talk to the people there.

There is a ton of great info on this site, read as much as you can, enjoy the hobby.

Either light up or leave me alone

I agree with going to the local shop...that may be the final frontier in smoking outside of your home one day!  It's always good to get in with a group of cigar smokers!  Makes the hobby that much more fun

I also agree.  However, instead of going to the local shop, I actually prefer the nights when a few buds get together, have a few drinks, and play some poker while smoking their favorite sticks.  Then again, this activity would mostly likely take place in the comfort of one's home.  Besides a bowling alley, bar, or cigar shop, where are some other interesting places individuals can go in order to enjoy a good cigar with some good company?
